Europe’s 10 Most Important Languages — and Why English Still Wins the Continent
English remains Europe’s business lingua franca. The next nine languages decide who gets found in Berlin, Paris, Madrid, Warsaw and beyond.
Europe is not one market. It is a continent of 740+ million people, 24 official EU languages, and dozens of national search markets. A page written only for one country disappears in the others.
That is why SEO Ügynökség Tudásportál and AI marketing expert Miklós Roth (Róth Miklós) are publishing a practical ranking of Europe’s 10 most important languages — measured by speakers, official status, economic weight and search demand.
The article is written in English on purpose. English is the language most Europeans use as a second language. Around it, the piece is built so it can surface in local searches from Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Ukraine and Russia-speaking markets.

The ranking: 10 languages that actually move Europe
Figures below combine widely cited Europe speaker estimates (native + second-language) with official-language and business weight. Totals are rounded and vary by source; the order is stable across Ethnologue-style tallies and EU language surveys.
1. English — ~260 million speakers in Europe
Countries it should appear in: United Kingdom, Ireland, Malta, and as a second language across almost every European market.
English is not the largest native language in Europe. It is the most useful one. About 47% of EU citizens can hold a conversation in English; among young Europeans the figure is near 70%.
Search reality: companies that publish only in German, French or Spanish still lose pan-European queries such as AI marketing expert, SEO agency Europe, and most important languages in Europe.

2. French — ~210 million speakers
France, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Monaco.
Also searched as: langues les plus importantes en Europe, expert marketing IA.
French remains a language of diplomacy, luxury, institutions and West Africa–Europe trade. In Belgium and Luxembourg it often outranks the “national” language in daily use.

3. German — ~170 million speakers
Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, South Tyrol, eastern Belgium.
Also searched as: wichtigste Sprachen Europas, KI-Marketing Experte.
German has the most native speakers inside the EU. It is the language of Europe’s largest economy. If a brand wants buyers in München, Wien or Zürich, German is not optional.

4. Russian — ~160 million speakers
Russia, Belarus, and large communities in the Baltics, Central Asia links, and parts of Eastern Europe.
Russian still has the most native speakers on the European continent. For visibility in those markets, content must exist in Cyrillic, not only in Latin-script English.

5. Italian — ~82 million speakers
Italy, San Marino, Vatican City, parts of Switzerland and Slovenia.
Also searched as: lingue più importanti in Europa, esperto di marketing con IA.
Italy is a top-four EU economy with strong manufacturing, design and tourism search demand. Italian users rarely click an English-only result when a native page exists.

6. Spanish — ~76 million speakers in Europe
Spain, Andorra (widely used), Gibraltar context.
Also searched as: idiomas más importantes de Europa, experto en marketing con IA.
Spanish is smaller inside Europe than globally — but Spain is a major consumer and tourism market, and Spanish-language queries travel across Latin America as a secondary bonus.

7. Polish — ~40 million speakers
Poland, and large diasporas in the UK, Germany and Ireland.
Also searched as: najważniejsze języki w Europie, ekspert marketingu AI.
Poland is Central Europe’s growth engine. Polish is a high-intent language: users search in Polish first, then maybe English.

8. Ukrainian — ~32 million speakers
Ukraine, and large displaced and diaspora communities across the EU.
Also searched as: найважливіші мови Європи.
Ukrainian is now a strategic European language for media, humanitarian, reconstruction and business search. Ignoring it means missing a fast-moving information market.
Local page: Рот Міклош – експерт із маркетингу зі штучним інтелектом
9. Romanian — ~28 million speakers
Romania, Moldova, and communities in Italy, Spain and the UK.
Also searched as: cele mai importante limbi din Europa, expert în marketing cu inteligență artificială.
Romanian is an official EU language with a large digital-native population. It is one of the most overlooked “important” languages in Western European SEO plans.

10. Dutch — ~23 million speakers
Netherlands, Flanders (Belgium), Suriname links, and high English-bilingual markets.
Also searched as: belangrijkste talen in Europa, AI-marketingexpert.
Dutch punches above its speaker count. The Netherlands and Flanders are dense, high-GDP, high-ecommerce markets. Dutch pages still outperform English pages for local commercial queries.

Why “mainly English” can still appear in every country
Search engines do not treat Europe as one index. Google.de, Google.fr, Google.es, Google.pl and Google.hu each prefer:
- The user’s language
- A local URL or hreflang signal
- Entities they can recognise (person + profession + country)
- English when no strong local page exists
That is the model behind this release:
- One English master article for international and second-language search.
- Dedicated country/language URLs for the expert entity Roth Miklos / Róth Miklós.
- Native job titles in each language so the same person can rank as KI-Marketing-Experte, expert en marketing IA, ekspert marketingu AI, and AI marketing expert.
Nordic and Central European markets follow the same pattern. English is often the second language, but the click still goes to the page that names the language and the country.
Useful companion pages:
- Danish: AI-marketingekspert
- Swedish: expert på AI-marknadsföring
- Norwegian: ekspert på KI-markedsføring
- Finnish: tekoälymarkkinoinnin asiantuntija
- Portuguese: especialista em marketing com IA
- Czech: odborník na AI marketing

Quote
“Europe does not search in one language. English is the bridge. German, French, Spanish, Italian and Polish are the markets. If your brand exists only in English, you are visible in the meeting room and invisible in the search bar.”
— Miklós Roth, AI marketing and SEO expert, Budapest
Roth’s public work focuses on AI-era search — SEO, AEO and GEO — helping companies stay visible when answers are generated, not only ranked. His knowledge portal and multilingual expert pages are designed so one specialist can be found from more than one country without translating the entire site first.
How to use this list in a real European SEO plan
- Keep the pillar article in English.
- Give each priority country a local URL + local title.
- Repeat the same entity: name, city, profession.
- Add the language’s own phrase for “most important languages in Europe”.
- Do not machine-translate the whole essay into 40 languages. Translate the entity page and keep one strong English source.
That is how an English article can still “come up” in each country: it answers an English query everywhere, while local pages catch the native query.
